TAKE
A SEAT
Care of a new tattoo is important because it reduces the possibility of an infection. It also ensures optimal appearance of the tattoo once fully healed. Three basic principles apply to a proper tattoo healing:
DO:

-
Treat your tattoo like a wound.
-
Remove the bandage applied to the tattoo slowly and gently.
-
Wash the tattoo gently with parfum-free soap and water.
-
Pat dry with paper towel or paper tissue. Normal towels may release undesired fibers on your tattoo.
-
After the first two (2) days, or when the tattoo begins to feel dry and itchy, begin using a tattoo cream like Hustle Butter Deluxe, Eucerin Aquaphor Repair-Salbe or Balm Tattoo.
DON’T:

-
Do NOT cover your tattoo with plastic or wound pad, unless you need to temporarily protect your tattoo from dirt (e.g., if you work in a kitchen or hospital). It is important that you let your skin “breathe” as much as possible to avoid bacterial infections.
-
DO NOT use anything that is perfumed, contains dye or sunblock before your tattoo is completely healed. Only use the amount that is necessary to hydrate your skin, avoiding thick layers. Normal body lotions shall not be used.
-
Do NOT exercise and do NOT soak your tattoo in water for at least the first four (4) weeks. This includes swimming pools, sea, baths and hot tubs. Remember that your skin is hurt, and you do not want any bacteria to enter your skin. Washing your tattoo in the shower is acceptable.
-
DO NOT expose you tattoo to sunlight or tanning while healing.
-
Your tattoo should heal very much like a sunburn does. The skin will become itchy and dry as healing progresses, and it will begin flaking. With good care it should not scab. If scabs do form, DO NOT pick at them. Allow them to heal and fall off naturally. Picking can result in colour loss.
While healing varies greatly from individual to individual, in most cases the tattoo will be completely healed in four (4) weeks if properly cared for.
